Twiga!
Today is World Giraffe Day and it is always good to see new life starting at Loisaba where the giraffe have the maximum protection.
If you would like to know about the work of the Twiga Walinzi (Giraffe Guards) and the protection given to the animals all across Northern Kenya thanks to individual conservancies and the over-arching Northern Rangelands Trust, then you would enjoy reading: Flowers for Elephants by Peter Martell. For the first time, as an outsider, I understood the purpose and ethos of the conservancies if not completely, at least a lot better; the positive impact of these organisations and their communities has been miraculous but hard-won.
Another book that I can't wait to get my hands on is by Chip Duncan who is an acclaimed filmmaker, photojournalist, writer, poet, and humanitarian. Chip never forgets who is at the real heart of his books and always gives credit to the people he works with. The photographs are absolutely stunning.
Chip is a regular contributor to projects in the Ewaso area and significant profits from this book will also go to the community.
