Dam, dam, and double dam

Whilst nothing man-made can have as much impact as a volcanic eruption or an earthquake, the creation of a man-made watering hole can make the world of difference to the ecology of the land.

During the war, around 1944, Naibelebele Dam, at the furthest reach of Loisaba, and Nduru Dam were built by Italian prisoners of war. Dams such as Kiboko and Colcheccio were built by Count Ancilloto between 1976 and 1989.

Tom (Silvester) has built further dams during his tenure at Loisaba and dredged some others out. As a result animals have many choices about where to drink, swim, hunt, and play, and guests have the opportunity to sit in secluded and peaceful surroundings watching the animals come and go.

Weather can still affect these dams, and in times of drought they may dry out altogether as in 2019 when the Mrefu Dam was down to the last puddle, leaving the fish easy prey to the Fish Eagles and Hyena.
