The Black Leopard

There was much excitement last evening about the sighting of a black male leopard at Chui Dam in Loisaba Conservancy where guides John, Peter, Moses, and Mohamed and all of their guests had a great view of this magnificent creature.

Although black - melanistic - leopards have been seen by members of the community for several years, it was only two years ago that our well-known Researcher, Ambrose and Dr. Nicholas Pilford from San Diego Zoo Global, started to capture pictures a black female leopard and her one black, and one spotted cub, on his remote camera traps. This brought the total number of black leopards up to five in the area.

At the time it caused a sensation and was reported (and mis-reported) all over the world.

This is the Kenya Specific report at the time.

And here is some of the footage that Ambrose captured on behalf of San Diago Zoo Global of the female and two cubs: Leopard and cubs

Last night's male was particularly muscular and appeared to be very confident.

Who blinked first?

For the sake of balance, here is a picture of a spotted one, although it should be noted that melanistic leopards also have rosettes but these are not so visible because of the leopard's black coat.

Leopards are also described as 'crepuscular - which means that they tend to be active at twilight.
